Why Virtual Learning? And Why Now?

The impact of online and blended learning in primary and secondary grades is substantial. According to a report published in 2011 by iNacol, Online and Blended Learning: A Survey of Policy and Practice of K–12 Schools Around the World, online learning has the potential to change the educational experience of every student in any country.

The state of Florida has the largest state-operated virtual school with over 300,000 enrollments, which is near the total enrollments of the remaining 26 states with virtual schools combined.

Growth in online and blended learning has been limited by several factors in the United States. Until now.

Previously, learning standards were individually established by each of the 50 states. With the advent of the Common Core State Standards, 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted what students must know and be able to do in English Language Arts and Mathematics in Kindergarten through Grade 12. This critical step means that content and instructional resources can now be shared between districts, states, and regions across the United States. This is particularly important to smaller districts, rural districts, or districts with chronically underperforming schools.

Secondly, programming resources at the district and state level have been largely dedicated to data gathering and reporting. Funding formulas for state virtual schools have varied considerably from state to state, resulting in uneven development of state virtual schools. For example, the state of Florida has the largest state-operated virtual school with over 300,000 enrollments, which is near the total enrollments of the remaining 26 states with virtual schools combined.

At eSolutionsinEducation, we help bridge the gap between content experts and instructional designers.

To advance online and blended learning, ideally curriculum writers who are experts in a content area (such as algebra) will work with instructional designers to develop the computer modules used by instructors and students in an online environment. An important gap in the flow of information exists between content experts with proven results in a traditional learning environment and instructional designers with technical expertise. Now there is another option. eSolutionsinEducations is forging partnerships to bridge these gaps.

At eSIE, we are committed to helping our clients transition into the world of virtual learning with ease - affordably and efficiently.

Opportunities are evolving for sharing publicly developed educational content through the concept of Open Educational Resources (OER). Additionally, proprietary educational materials developed for use in the traditional classroom can be translated to the online environment and shared across districts and states that have adopted the Common Core standards.

Our goal is to help as many institutions and organizations as possible take advantage of these valuable resources, ultimately giving more students, of all ages, an opportunity to flourish."
